In Year 6, students will take on new challenges, develop their leadership skills, and deepen their understanding of the world around them. We are committed to providing a supportive and engaging environment where every child can thrive.

We look forward to this journey, working together to ensure that your child has a successful and memorable Year 6. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns. Together, we can make this year a truly remarkable experience for your child.

Here's to an amazing Year 6!

Our Summer term  1

This half term in English we will be basing our writing on the book Wonder by R.J Palacio. Wonder is a story about a boy named August Pullman, who was born with a face that looks different from other kids. After being homeschooled for years, he starts going to a regular school for the first time. At first, some children are unkind, but as the story goes on, many begin to see the kind, funny, and smart person August really is. The book teaches us that it's important to be kind, to look beyond appearances, and to treat everyone with respect. The children will explore thoughts and feelings of different characters throughout the unit and explore how the actions of others make a person feel. The children will write diary entries, explore formal and informal writing and share their own feelings and experiences of first times or being the new child.

In science the children will start exploring variation and inheritance. What is variation and how does this happen, then moving onto look at inheritance and where we get our physical features and traits from. After the first couple of weeks we will move onto learning about the amazing world of evolution and how this is happening over thousands of years. We will share the travels of Charles Darwin and his discoveries on the Galapagos Islands.

Our Geography topic this half term is Biomes, we will study the main 6 biomes in the world. Looking at the world map we will locate the major biomes in the world, what animals live in these biomes and how they have adapted to their habitat. We will explore the climate and the landscape of each and finally create our exciting Biome In A Box art project.

We are will be reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness for our guided reading this half term. This is a story  about a boy named Conor who is going through a very difficult time—his mum is very sick, and he's feeling scared and angry. One night, a huge monster shaped like a yew tree comes to visit him. But instead of being scary, the monster tells Conor strange stories and helps him face his feelings. As the monster keeps visiting, Conor learns how to deal with his pain, anger, and the truth about what’s really happening in his life. It’s a powerful story about love, loss, and being honest with yourself.

This term, our mathematicians will develop their skills in:

Area, Perimeter and Volume

Statistics

Shape

To support their learning, children will complete regular homework to consolidate their understanding of these concepts and apply them in different contexts.

Please make sure your children are secure with all times tables, up to 12 times. To help with this, please continue to practise using Times Tables Rockstars.
