Autumn 1 Overview 

Here is what the children will be learning this half-term in year 5.

In English, we will be starting to use Year 5 writing features, such as parenthesis and relative clauses, while continuing to embed our Year 4 grammar skills, such as fronted adverbials. We will be reading the story of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and will be writing a character description of Hugo, the main character, as well as a set of instructions on how to build an automaton. In maths, we will be using our place value charts and counters to represent numbers up to one million. We will also use our charts to help us add and subtract six digit numbers with exchanges. In Geography, we will be looking at how land is used in both rural and urban areas. We will also be going on a walk around the local area, which will help us to create our own sketch maps. In DT, we will be making our own automata toys using cams. We will design our own toys based on a topic we have learnt at school and build the toys using equipment in small groups. In Science, we will be learning all about forces and will be conducting many fun experiments to help us understand friction, air resistance, water resistance and gravity.
