English Intent and Implementation

At Barden Primary School we aim to provide our children with a quality curriculum that develops a love of reading, writing and discussion. We have created a curriculum that encourage our children to become enthusiastic and engaged with English. Our curriculum provides children with the opportunities to:

  • Read and write with confidence, fluency and understanding, orchestrating a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and correct.
  • Have an interest in books and read for enjoyment.
  • Have an interest in words, their meanings; developing a growing vocabulary in spoken and written forms.
  • Be developing the powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness.
  • Have a suitable technical vocabulary to articulate their responses.
  • Develop into enthusiastic and responsive readers and writers.

APPROACHES TO READING

Shared reading

This is an important modelling strategy where the class teacher reads to their class using a range of genres, using sets of class readers, individual books or extracts to stimulate the children’s interest in reading and to foster a love of good literacy.

Guided reading

The children are organised into small groups, depending on their reading level, and read a range of texts. In guided reading the children work with the teacher on their next steps for learning in reading. They work on either applying their phonic knowledge or developing their comprehension.

Home reading

Children are encouraged to read at home as often as possible. For children in EYFS and KS1 the books are fully decodable and linked to the children's levels. Throughout the school children have access to Bug Club and Oxford Reading Tree reading books and their reading is monitored and recorded. These are organised in colour bands meaning that children are choosing a book from a selection that is well matched to their ability. Due to COVID 19 pandemic we have purchased Bug Club which is an online reading scheme.

There are a wide range of reading books available, starting with phonics reading books, structured reading scheme books and leading onto free choice books, as the children become more independent readers.
