Task 1

Weighing –   collect different fruits or vegetables – if you have a weighing scales see if you can weigh each one and write the weight of it down.  Which is the heaviest one?  Can you put them in order?  If you don’t have a weighing scales place each one in your hands and have a try at ordering them from the heaviest to the lightest.  Draw a picture or write down what you find out. 

Task 2

Have a look in your cupboards – see if you can find where it says the weight of a packet, tin or box of food.  Draw a picture of 3 of the packages and write down the weights – which is the lightest?

 

Task 3

How to make a origami paper chooser

I would like you to make a paper chooser – using shapes and numbers –

Write the numbers carefully, if you are learning the numbers to 10, use those numbers if you are learning the numbers 11 – 10 use those numbers, or if you want use any random numbers! Try to use shapes that you don’t know so you learn as you play the game.

The messages inside could be messages to make people smile – like ‘Have a wonderful day.’   A smiley face.   ‘You are wonderful.’

Week beginning 1st June     

It's all about fruit and vegetables this week!

 

Task 1 

Have 3 different fruits and ask all the members of your family which fruit they like the best (they may want to taste each one) and make a chart of what you find out.  You may want to telephone some of your relatives to ask them too.  Find out which is the most popular fruit and which is the least popular.   Do the same activity with vegetables.

 

Task 2 

Counting carefully – Make a fruit picture – choose different fruits and cut them up and organise them into making a fruit picture.  Count how many pieces of fruit you used.  You could make a really long number sentence to show how you added the different fruits.

 

6  bits + 8  bits + 12  bits =   29 pieces of fruit

 

Task 3 

When you eat fruit at home or when you are helping make a meal see if you can help cut the fruit and vegetables and talk about cutting the whole vegetable into halves or quarters, count how many pieces that you might have from the whole one.  How can you record what you can done?

Numbers

Below is a sheet of numbers which was handed out on Friday 20th March

 

Carefully cut them up and play

Number hunt together.

Here are some ideas –

Hide the numbers around the room and encourage your child to go on a number hunt.

  • When they find a number they have to bring it back to you and tell you the number.
  • When they find a number they tell you or write down the number that is one more or two more than that number.
  • When they find a number they double the number
  • When they find a number they collect that many items and have to share them between 2 teddies (or similar).
  • When they find a number they have to tell you a way to make that number e.g.  if they find 5 they might work out that 1+2+2 makes 5.
  • When they find a number they have to do that many star jumps/hops or maybe frog jumps.

 

Other activities you could play –

Turn all the numbers over and pick 2 numbers – add the numbers and find the total.

Turn all the numbers over and pick 2 numbers – subtract the smaller one from the larger one.

Mix the numbers up and order them from the smallest to the greatest or the greatest to the smallest.

Use a selection of the numbers and order them.

Put the numbers on the floor, scrunch up a piece of paper and throw the paper to land on a number, have three goes and add the 3 numbers together.

Practise writing the numbers.

Draw a number character and make up a story about them.

 

And of course make up your own creative games.  Have fun with numbers.
