Curriculum Overview

YEAR 4

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW: SPRING TERM 2 2020

MA MATHS

In Maths, we will be learning all about place value. We will use lots of practical equipment, pictorial representations and time to talk to deepen our understanding of numbers. We will work up to 4 digit numbers and answer a range of reasoning questions. We will also study addition and subtraction involving exchange. Again, lots of practical activities to secure and deepen our understanding. Times tables continue to be our focus and we will practise orally every day.

EN ENGLISH

In English, we will continue to study Woof! We will write our own stories with a dilemma. The Mousehole Cat is our new novel. We will learn about how the story is structured and the features of the story. We will look at description and the character relationships. To finish the unit we will create our own setting and characters before writing our own story.

S  SCIENCE

FORCES AND MAGNETS

We will investigate a variety of forces and see them in action. We will learn about magnets, how we use magnets in every day life and how the force of a magnet works.

         CREATIVE 

         CURRICULUM

BRAZIL

All about Brazil! Our geography based topic is all about Brazil. We will study a range of maps and place Brazil correctly, investigating the countries within South America and the surrounding seas. We will learn about human and physical features and compare Brazil to the UK. We will design and make a carnival headdress and study the artist Beatrix Milhazes.

  C    COMPUTING

We will research various topics using the internet and use effective search techniques. We will create a factfile and a poster to show how magnets are used in everyday life.

RE

Our unit is all about Sikhism. We will discuss our own commitments and find out about Guru Nanak, the 5Ks and how we can show kindness to others.

      J MUSIC

We will be learning a range of songs including Lean on Me. We will learn about crotchets and play a tune using the glockenspiels.

F   FRENCH

We will look at the order of words in French and ask and learn about a variety of every day questions and commands. We will look at items found in a stadium and continue to build our vocabulary. We will ask each other about our favourite sports and respond using French words.

P.E. P.E.

This half term in PE we will be participating in dodgeball. We will first focus on throwing under and overarm. We will then practise dodging out of the way of a ball. After that, we will work on being tactical, by trying to confuse our opponents this will develop our reasoning skills. We will finish this unit by having a year four intra-competition.

P.S P.S.H.E

We will learn about drugs and safety in our environment. We will create a presentation about various safety messages based upon our environments, working as a team. We will consider the feelings of others and how we can respond and decide what makes a ‘good friend’. As always, we will look at how we can stay safe online and what our online identity can ‘say’ about us.

 

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:SPRING TERM 1 

MATHS

In Maths, we will be learning all about Roman numerals and sequencing. We will find the area of rectilinear shapes and practice our written calculation skills. We will look at co-ordinates on a grid and complete given shapes. Finally, we will study fractions related to division and decimals.

ENGLISH

In English, we will be studying newspapers and stories on a theme. We will read a variety of newspaper articles and even write our own. We will read the story 'Woof!' and find out what happens to our main character. We will write our own stories based around the theme imagining what it would be like to magically change into an animal!

Creative Curriculum

Vikings

This Creative Curriculum topic is history based. We will raise and answer questions about an artefact and share our learning as a team. We will find out why the Vikings settled in Britain and where they came from.  We will study the raid at Lindisfarne and we will also be having a star guest…our own Viking visitor! We will be able to see how the Vikings lived and learn about why they were so successful.

Computing

We will  create and design our own Scratch game called Hide and Seek.

RE

Our unit is all about Hindu Dharma. We will consider the theme of 'hope'and learn about Diwali and the story of Rama and Sita. 

Music

We will be learning a range of songs and learning Cuckoo by Benjamin Britten. The unit will end with learning a basic song phrase using the glockenspiels.

French

We will listen to French stories and look at new words. We will investigate how words are placed in a sentence and how to describe people. We will make our own book about the features of our face.

P.E.

Our sport is tennis. We will learn how to hit and pass the ball in various ways and learn some basic game strategies. We will find out how to outwit our opponents and know how to handle the racket correctly.

P.S.H.E.

We will be learning how to keep ourselves healthy and safe. We will identify risks and hazards in our environment and learn about what is safe/not safe to share online.

 

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:AUTUMN TERM 2

 

MATHS

In Maths, we will be learning all about time. We will study the 24 hour clock and convert between different units of time. In the following week, we will cover length, including perimeter, converting units of measure and solving problems.  In our data unit, we will collect and present data in a range of charts and raise/answer questions about the data shown. We will learn how to divide using the ‘chunking’ method and find out how to round up or down after division.

ENGLISH

In English, we will be studying fairy tales. We will watch the film The Pied Piper and pull out the features of this genre. We will extract the plot and plan our own fairy tale stories. We will look at some classic poetry linked to this and try to learn sections off by heart. Towards the end of the half term, we will look at non-fiction writing. We will study a range of newspaper articles and build up to writing our own report!

Creative Curriculum

Anglo Saxons

This Creative Curriculum topic is history based. We will raise and answer questions about an artefact and share our learning as a team. We will find out why the Anglo Saxons settled in Britain and where they came from.  We will investigate an Anglo Saxon King named Alfred and look at the objects discovered at Sutton Hoo. We will also be having a star guest…our own Saxon visitor! We will be able to see how the Saxons lived and create a perfect settlement.

Computing

We will research lots about the Anglo Saxons and create and design a Scratch game called Hide and Seek.

RE

Our unit is all about Islam. We will consider our own commitments and how difficult/easy they are to achieve.  We will look at The Five Pillars and discuss the importance of these within the Islamic faith.

Music

We will be learning a range of songs to perform in our Christmas production.

French

We will listen to French stories and look at new words. We will investigate how words are placed in a sentence and how to describe people.

P.E.

Our sport is basketball. We will learn how to pass in various ways and learn some basic game strategies. We will find out how to outwit our opponents using false throws and how to dribble the ball when running in different directions.

P.S.H.E.

We will be learning how to keep ourselves healthy and how to make sensible choices. We will also look at images we might see online and how these can be manipulated for advertising.

 

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW: AUTUMN TERM 1

 

MATHS

In Maths, we will be learning all about place value. We will recognise the value of digits in three and four digit numbers and learn how to move the digits when multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. We will be adding and subtracting  numbers using the written method and develop efficient mental strategies. We will count up and down in tenths and hundredths and investigate decimals in the context of money. We will also be focusing on times tables, as we work towards knowing all of the tables up to 12.

ENGLISH

In English, we will be studying explanation texts focusing upon Wallace and Gromit’s Cracking Contraptions. We will look at a variety of explanations, find their features and then show off our writing skills by producing an explanation of our own! We will also study ‘The Dragon Machine’ fantasy text. We will start to use adventurous vocabulary and design our own fantasy settings.

SCIENCE

In science we will be exploring materials and how they change. Our topic focuses around Antarctica and preparing for an expedition. We will design and carry out our own experiments to support us in making decisions. We will learn about solids, liquids and gas and be able to explain how materials change states.

Creative Curriculum

Majestic Mountains

We will be learning all about mountains, how they are formed and describing their features. We will find well-known mountains on a variety of maps and write a diary imagining we are doing the climb! We will decide what equipment would be needed to make a climb and meeting the mountain rescue team.

Computing

We will create a graph showing the heights of a variety of mountains and use the Explain Everything app to describe mountain weather. We will also be developing our research skills using the internet and generating our questions. We will also look at how we can keep ourselves safe on the internet and how report if we aren’t happy.

RE

Our unit is all about God and how we can be a light in the world. We will research the Christingle service and pose religious questions.

Music

We will be studying music from the 70s era, learning to sing a collection of Abba songs and recognising a range of instruments. We will learn a piece and play the glockenspiels.

French

We will listen to and learn a French song, pose questions to our partner and follow a set of simple instructions. We will design our own dream playground and play a game called Jaques a dit!

P.E.

We are participating in a dance unit. We will be focusing on street dance and working towards creating a performance.
