Welcome to Year 6!

We are so excited to welcome you into Year 6 – your final and most memorable year at primary school! This is a year full of exciting adventures, new challenges, and the chance to make lasting memories with your friends and teachers. As the oldest in school, you'll be setting a brilliant example for others and taking on new responsibilities with pride. We know that settling into Year 6 can feel like a big step, but we’re here to support you every step of the way. Let’s make this an unforgettable year!

Autumn 2

English
In this unit, we’ll be exploring the fascinating world of biographies — the stories of real people and the lives they’ve led. We’ll study the achievements and challenges of two remarkable figures: Walt Disney, the visionary behind some of the world’s most beloved animations, and William Shakespeare, the playwright whose words have shaped English literature for centuries. Through reading, research, and discussion, we’ll discover what makes a great biography and how writers bring real-life stories to life. To finish the unit, each student will research and create their own biography of a famous person, celebrating the impact individuals can have on the world.

Guided Reading
In our guided reading lessons, we’ll be diving into When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle — a powerful and moving story set during World War II. The novel follows Joseph, a boy sent to live in a city under threat of bombing, where he helps care for a fierce silverback gorilla named Adonis at the local zoo. Through Joseph’s experiences, we’ll explore themes of courage, friendship, and finding hope in difficult times. As we read, we’ll discuss the characters, setting, and emotions that make this story so memorable, while developing our skills in comprehension, inference, and critical thinking.

History - World War 2
In our history unit, we’ll be learning about one of the most significant events in modern history — World War II. We’ll explore how the war began, the countries involved as Allies and Axis Powers, and the famous world leaders who played key roles in the conflict. Our learning will also cover life on the home front, including the Blitz, evacuation, and rationing, as well as the tragic events of the Holocaust. Through stories, sources, and discussions, we’ll work to understand how World War II shaped the world we live in today and the importance of remembering its lessons.

DT - Shelters
In our D.T. unit, we’ll be exploring the design and construction of shelters. We’ll begin by investigating different types of famous shelters and learning how they are built to be strong and safe. Using this knowledge, we’ll experiment with ways to join materials securely and test which methods create the most stable structures. We’ll also evaluate existing designs, thinking about what makes them successful. Finally, we’ll plan, design, and build our own model air raid shelters, following a success criteria to make sure they are both strong and effective — just like real wartime shelters!

Science – Electricity
In our science unit, we’ll be investigating the fascinating world of electricity. We’ll learn how electrical circuits work and how to use the correct symbols to draw them clearly. Throughout the unit, we’ll build both complete and incomplete circuits, explore how changes affect the brightness of bulbs or the speed of motors, and carry out experiments to understand how voltage impacts a circuit’s performance. Through hands-on investigations and careful observation, we’ll become confident in building, testing, and explaining different types of electrical circuits.

Maths
In our maths lessons this half-term, we’ll be focusing on fractions. Over the next four weeks, we’ll develop a deep understanding of how fractions work and how they relate to numbers we already know. We’ll start by exploring equivalent fractions and learning how to compare and order them accurately. Then, we’ll move on to adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, as well as dividing fractions by whole numbers. Finally, we’ll use our knowledge to solve real-life problems and find fractions of amounts. By the end of the unit, we’ll be confident in using fractions in a variety of mathematical contexts.
