Welcome to Year 6!

We are so excited to welcome you into Year 6 – your final and most memorable year at primary school! This is a year full of exciting adventures, new challenges, and the chance to make lasting memories with your friends and teachers. As the oldest in school, you'll be setting a brilliant example for others and taking on new responsibilities with pride. We know that settling into Year 6 can feel like a big step, but we’re here to support you every step of the way. Let’s make this an unforgettable year!

English
This half-term, our English lessons will begin with the magical and mysterious novel The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie. The story follows a hidden shop that appears and disappears without warning, filled with wonders and enchanted rooms created by pure imagination. As we dive into the world of the Emporium, children will be inspired to use their own creativity and imagination to design their own magical rooms and write captivating adventures set within them. Through rich vocabulary, descriptive writing, and storytelling, children will develop their writing skills while exploring the limitless possibilities of their own imaginations. It promises to be a truly magical start to the year!

Guided Reading
This half-term, Year 6 will be diving into Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, a powerful and emotional adventure story that explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and survival. The book follows a young boy named Michael who is washed up on a remote island after falling overboard during a family sailing trip. There, he meets the mysterious Kensuke, a man with a secret past, and an unlikely friendship begins to grow. As we journey through the story together, the children will explore how characters change, the challenges they face, and the deep messages woven into the narrative. Through discussion and reflection, pupils will strengthen their comprehension skills while being captivated by this unforgettable tale.

Geography – Mountains
Our first Geography unit in Year 6 is all about mountains! The children will begin by exploring where the major mountain ranges of the world are located, using atlases and coordinates to find and label them. They'll learn what a mountain range is, investigate the different types of mountains, and discover how they are formed through tectonic activity and natural forces. As we climb higher (virtually!), we’ll look at how climate, temperature, and air pressure change with altitude, and what impact this has on both people and wildlife. Children will also label the key features of a mountain and explore how tourism can affect mountainous regions – both positively and negatively.

Art – Kara Walker and Silhouettes
This half-term in Art, Year 6 will be exploring the powerful and thought-provoking work of artist Kara Walker. Known for her striking black paper silhouettes, Walker uses simple shapes to tell complex stories about history, identity, and culture. The children will begin by learning what a silhouette is and how this artistic technique can be used to convey movement, emotion, and narrative. They will practise creating silhouettes of people, everyday items, and buildings, experimenting with scale and positioning. Inspired by Kara Walker’s style, the children will then use their own creativity to design and produce a unique silhouette artwork that tells a story of their own.

Science – Living Things and Their Habitats
This half-term in Science, we will be exploring Living Things and Their Habitats. The children will learn how to group and classify a variety of organisms, including plants and animals, based on their characteristics. They will also discover what microorganisms are and why they are important, even though they are too small to see without a microscope. As part of their learning, pupils will explore the work of Carl Linnaeus, the scientist who developed the system of classification still used today to organise all living things.

Maths
How to Teach Place Value in 9 Easy StepsThis half-term in Maths, we will begin by strengthening their understanding of place value, focusing on numbers up to 1 million – an essential foundation for the year ahead. We’ll then move on to mastering the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with a focus on using efficient written methods and applying these skills to solve multistep problems. To build fluency and confidence, children will take part in weekly mental maths and arithmetic tests, helping them to practise key strategies and recall number facts quickly. Problem-solving will be woven throughout our lessons, encouraging logical thinking, resilience, and a deeper understanding of how maths is used in real-life situations.
