Welcome to Year 6!

We are so excited to welcome you into Year 6 – your final and most memorable year at primary school! This is a year full of exciting adventures, new challenges, and the chance to make lasting memories with your friends and teachers. As the oldest in school, you'll be setting a brilliant example for others and taking on new responsibilities with pride. We know that settling into Year 6 can feel like a big step, but we’re here to support you every step of the way. Let’s make this an unforgettable year!

Spring 2

English

In Spring 2, we will continue exploring the novel Seven Ghosts by Chris Priestley, using the stories to inspire our non-fiction writing. Our focus will be on newspaper reports, where we will cover the Year 6 objectives linked to journalistic writing. The children will study the key features of newspapers, including headlines, introductions, reported speech, formal language, and layout, and explore how these elements engage the reader. They will then plan and write their own newspaper report based on one of the ghosts from the book, applying their knowledge of structure and language to create an effective and exciting piece of non-fiction writing.

Guided Reading

This half-term in Guided Reading, we will be reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The novel tells the story of August “Auggie” Pullman, a young boy with a facial difference who is starting mainstream school for the first time. As the story unfolds through multiple perspectives, we explore themes of kindness, empathy, friendship and resilience, and consider what it truly means to “choose kind.”

Throughout the unit, children will develop their comprehension skills through discussion, prediction and inference, exploring characters’ thoughts and feelings, and analysing the author’s language choices. We will also reflect on the important messages within the text and make connections to our own experiences, helping to deepen both understanding and empathy.

Georgraphy - Trade and economics

In Geography this half-term, our focus will be on Trade and Economics. Children will learn about imports and exports, exploring what goods come into and leave different countries, and how this connects the world through global trade. We will investigate where El Salvador is located and examine why trade is important to its economy, particularly through the production of goods such as coffee.

A key part of our learning will be understanding Fairtrade — what it means, why it matters, and how it supports farmers and communities, including those in El Salvador. We will also explore how trade has changed over time, considering how transport, technology and globalisation have shaped the way countries buy and sell goods today.

Science – Circulatory System

In Science this half-term, we will be learning about the circulatory system and how it keeps our bodies functioning effectively. Children will explore the role of the heart, blood and blood vessels, and understand how blood flows around the body. We will learn about the difference between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, and how oxygen is transported to our organs and muscles to keep us healthy.

As part of our learning, pupils will investigate the structure of the heart in more detail and take part in a heart dissection to help deepen their understanding of how it works. Throughout the unit, we will develop scientific vocabulary, enquiry skills and a clear understanding of how this vital system supports the body.

Maths

In Maths this half-term, we will be focusing on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (FDP), developing children’s understanding of how these concepts are linked and how to convert between them confidently. Pupils will apply their knowledge to solve reasoning and problem-solving questions, building fluency and accuracy. We will also be studying Statistics, with a particular focus on interpreting and drawing line graphs and pie charts. Children will learn how to read data carefully, answer questions using information presented, and understand how data can be represented in different ways. In addition, we will explore Area, Perimeter and Volume. Pupils will calculate the perimeter and area of a range of shapes and move on to finding the volume of cubes and cuboids. Throughout the unit, we will continue to develop mathematical reasoning skills and encourage children to explain and justify their thinking.
