2 Swallows

Mrs Stansfield  and  Mrs Hameed

Welcome to Year 2.

Please read through the information below to help you and your child understand all that will be happening in our school year.

We encourage lots of reading in 2 Swallows.

In Year 2, we like to promote a love of reading. Throughout the year, we will be encouraging your child to read with independence; leading to a real love of reading for pleasure.

Your child needs to bring their reading book to school every day.  Their book will be changed once a week.

Teachers will not hear your child read their home reading book. Instead we will hear them read individually each week in a guided reading session. We will record in their home reading book when they have read at school.

Please try and listen to your child read everyday, signing their reading record each time you listen to them and add any comments you wish regarding your child's reading.

Library day is Thursday

Your child will get a library book every week.

Please ensure your child returns their book every Thursday.

Please help your child read and look after their book.

Lost or damaged books will have to be paid for.

Your child will have spellings to learn each week.  They will have a test every Tuesday.
Your child should read their reading book every day.

Your child will receive topic homework each half term. They will be given a range of tasks and can choose to do as many as they wish. This should be returned to school the Monday of the last week in the half term.

Your child will be given their maths Rockstars log in so that they can practice their times tables at home.

Homework should be completed in pencil.  Please try and encourage your child to do their homework on their own.

If you need any support with homework please feel free to come and see myself or Mrs Hameed.

PE will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday.  Your child will not be able to take part in PE lessons if they do not have the correct kit.

PE Kit:
White T-shirt, Black shorts or close fitting leggings, Pumps.

Please ensure your child’s PE kit is fully labelled with their name on and in a labelled PE bag.
No rucksacks please, we do not have sufficient space in the cloak room area.

Please can you make sure your child has a pair of labelled wellies in school and a waterproof coat. We go out no matter what the weather.

In Maths, we will be learning all about place value. We will recognise the value of digits in 2 digit numbers.  We will be adding and subtracting  numbers using the written method and develop efficient mental strategies.

In English, we will be studying Stories with familiar settings, poetry and reports.  Children will be encouraged to write independently using adventurous vocabulary and the correct punctuation.  In handwriting children will be taught to do cursive writing.

In science we will be learning about Materials.  We will be looking at  where different materials come from, and if they are natural or man-made.  Children will be able to describe the properties of different materials using a wide variety of vocabulary.

Creative Curriculum

This half term our topic is  ‘The Place where I live’ As part of the topic we encourage the children to look at their surroundings and talk about the place where they live. They are welcome to bring pictures and any writing about Burnley and our local area.
Trips – We will be going on shorts walks around our local area to find places of interest.

Children will work with the digimap program. They will use a postcode to find a place on a digital map. They will label digital maps and use the zoom facility to find where they live. They will use graphing software to create a graph and use coding to develop a simple app.

Our unit is Buddhism. We will find out about the Buddha and learn how and where Buddhists pray and meditate.  We will read and talk about different Buddhists stories.

All the learning in this unit is focused around one song:

Hands, Feet, Heart - a song that celebrates South African Music. The children will be given opportunity to learn about a range of instruments.

We are participating in a dance unit. We will be thinking about the weather and perform a dance at the end.

We will be learning about our feelings and how what we do and say affects others.
